I wish you a soft warm bed at night, I wish you food to nourish the body and tongue, I wish you a wonderful sunshine when you wake up, I wish you the embrace of those who are dear, I wish you strength, I know you need it now more than ever, I wish you hope, that better days are coming…I know they are coming.
Since the day I have been looking for a job abroad, I cannot help but notice that despite the people’s enforced civility, believing that everyone is equal, there’s this typecast file where Filipinos are boxed. You can hire them and they will work hard, in fact twice as hard as the locals since they feel that they need to prove themselves worthy. We feel guilty that we have been given the chance to be free from the conundrums, lack and issues of our country, at the same time we want to feel qualified to stay in the foreign land where pay day is gold and life is much more easy, that we deserve to be here which is in all honesty a tug-o-war against our self, our roots, our being.
Seeing our homeland endure yet another storm (literally) made me sad for a moment, made me think of those who have lost their loved ones and properties… I have been there, I know how it feels coming home to a wrecked house due to a typhoon, but I have never felt more proud of being a Filipino now more than ever. Seeing the the unbreakable spirit of my countrymen and their will to put this behind them and move on is amazing and inspiring. Despite the notion that corruption and poverty is abundant in the Philippines, we, the Filipinos know the truth, our little secret…
We know that we are kind, we treat visitors like our own. We readily render help. We are ingenious, we are rich. We are healthy. We live in a land where everyone is a hero. We are successful and growing old in our country is a dream and that the western world should be jealous, that in Pinas, you will never be alone, that family is home, that a kid raised in the Philippines is the happiest kid, that happiness is abundant and that every morning brings hope.
I am a proud Filipino, and I know my heritage and prosperity is in my motherland. I will love her because she has loved and nurtured me.
